Top Allergens

In Canada, the top ten food allergens have been identified as: peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs, fish, soy, sesame seed, wheat and sulphites.  Of these, the five most common sources of food allergens to trigger anaphylaxis are:  PEANUTS, TREE NUTS, SEAFOOD, EGG AND MILK PRODUCTS.

Some individuals may be at risk for anaphylaxis from only one allergen, while others may be at risk for anaphylaxis from more than one.  In addition to these most common food allergens, the most common non-food allergens for risk of anaphylaxis include insect stings, latex, medicine and exercise induced.

It is important to remember that consultation with a physician and/or allergist is required in order to have the appropriate allergy testing completed to confirm whether there is an actual allergy or any intolerance to the allergen in question.  Allergy testing can be conducted in a few forms, the primary being skin and blood tests.
